Our visitor centre, located in the most stunning setting at Bodnant Welsh Foods in the Conwy valley, offers you a unique and fascinating insight into the world of bees and beekeeping.

National Beekeeping Centre Wales

History

Man has kept bees for thousands of years.

Right here in the beautiful Conwy Valley you can find historic evidence of beekeeping – holes in walls (called bee boles) where bees were kept in hollow logs or baskets.

King Edward 1st, who built Conwy Castle, allowed local beekeepers to sell honey for free, one day a year on the 13th September. The ‘Honey Fair’ is still running to this day!

Anyone can keep bees. You need to invest in some equipment and a little training, but it’s an extremely rewarding hobby to take up. You don’t need to be a landowner or live in the country. Urban gardens or roofs make ideal locations for hives – The Waldorf Astoria in New York City has hives on its roof! Or “rent” a hive through your local beekeepers association, just as you would an allotment.
