Fairbourne: Accommodation, Attractions, Activities, Going Out, Shopping, Things to Do, Places of Interest, Outdoors, Llanberis Holidays, Llanberis Area Location, North Wales.
Fairbourne is a village on the coast of Barmouth Bay, surrounded by Snowdonia National Park. Fairbourne was founded as a seaside resort by Aruther McDougall.
The Blue Flag beach at Fairbourne stretches over two miles and is backed by natural pebble banks, which expose a vast amount of golden sandy beaches from mid-tide level. At the northern end the beach joins with the Mawddach Estuary, while at the southern end of the beach is squeezed between sheer cliffs and the sea.
From the village, there is access to public footpaths to Arthog Falls, Cader Idris and Cregannan Lakes.
The quality of water is popular for swimming and other water activities.
The beach is an attractive venture for people exercising their dogs, but during the summer months there is a dog ban enforced on the central area.
There is sufficient access to the beach for those visitors with prams and/or wheelchairs, as well as disabled facilities, making this a welcoming rural location for all. There are also cafes, a leisure centre and the Fairbourn Railway that goes from Fairbourne Station to meet the ferry boat from Barmouth.
The beach is fronted by tank traps dating from the Second World War and known locally as “Dragon’s Teeth”.
