The Snowdonia Walking Festival

The Snowdonia Walking Festival is organised in partnership with Plas y Brenin, the National Mountain Centre. If you are staying or looking for a hotel in Betws y Coed during Saturday 4th or Sunday 5th November, this is the ideal event to experience beautiful Snowdonia and it’s breathtaking landscapes. We are situated in the heart of the Snowdonia National Park which means the Snowdonia Walking Festival is right on your fingertips.

The event will offer guided walks and expeditions, led by mountain leaders and mountaineering instructors from Plas y Brenin meaning you are in safe and knowledgeable hands.

The festival will feature a number of walks including the mines and lakes of Gwydir Forest, Clogwyn Mawr, The Traverse of Moel Siabod, Capel Curig to Betws y Coed and more. Please see below for more details on each walk:

SATURDAY 4TH NOVEMBER 2017

The Mines and Lakes of Gwydyr Forest
Walking from Betws y Coed into the Gwydyr Forest, this low-level walk is perfect during the autumn season.

  • Cost: £20
  • Meet at: The Royal Oak, Betws y Coed
  • Time: 10:00am
  • Notes: Packed Lunch & Drinks needed
  • Clothing: Full waterproofs, stout footwear and a reasonable level of fitness will be required.
  • Dogs: Yes
  • Suitable for: Not for very young children

 

Clogwyn Mawr ‘A Mini Mountain!
Experience some beautiful views from the smallest mountain in Snowdonia!

  • Cost: £5 – £15
  • Meet at: Tyn y Coed
  • Time: 10:00am (Half Day)
  • Notes: The group will return to the village for lunch
  • Clothing: Some steep slopes and rough ground so walking boots would be preferred
  • Dogs: No
  • Suitable for: Everyone

 

The Traverse of Moel Siabod, Capel to Pen y Gwryd
Explore the highest peak in the Moelwynion mountain range at 872m where you can view 13 of the 14 highest peaks in wales on a clear day!

  • Cost: £25
  • Meet at: Tyn y Coed
  • Time: 10:00am (Full Day)
  • Notes: You’ll be collected at 4.00 pm from the Pen y Gwryd by a Plas y Brenin mini bus and driven back to the Tyn y Coed.
  • Clothing: Full waterproofs, proper mountain boots and a good level of fitness will be required.
  • Dogs: No
  • Suitable for: Not for very young children

Capel Curig to Betws y Coed ‘The Falls of the Llugwy’
Take in the riverside tracks and autumnal weather during this walk down the hill to Betws where you can enjoy a little shopping time!

  • Cost: £10 – £20
  • Meet at: Tyn y Coed
  • Time: 11:00am
  • Notes: Packed Lunch & Drinks needed. This is a good sheltered low-level route and there will be a little shopping time in Betws before the minibus brings you back to Capel Curig at 4.30 pm
  • Clothing: Good walking shoes or boots and waterproofs will be necessary for this walk.
  • Dogs: Yes
  • Suitable for: Would feel like a long walk for young children

 

Capel Curig Circuit ‘Trees with a long view’
A walk where you can experience brilliant gorges, waterfalls and more in Snowdonia.

  • Cost: £5 – £15
  • Meet at: Tyn y Coed
  • Time: 1:00pm
  • Notes: This circular walk will leave, after lunch, from the Tyn y Coed, meet by the stagecoach and return to the Tyn y Coed by 4.30 pm.
  • Clothing: This is easy low level walking but good footwear and waterproof coats will be necessary.
  • Dogs: Yes
  • Suitable for: Everyone

 

SUNDAY 5TH NOVEMBER 2017

The Dyffryn Valley ‘I bought a mountain’ walk
A walk through the area featured in Thomas Firbanks 1940 ‘I bought a mountain’ book.

  • Cost: £10 – £20
  • Meet at: Siabod Café
  • Time: 10:30am
  • Notes: Packed Lunch & Drinks needed. You will be dropped off at Pen y Pass by a Plas y Brenin minibus.
  • Clothing: There is some rough open ground, the wind should be behind us but we’ll still need some stout footwear and waterproofs
  • Dogs: No
  • Suitable for: Would feel like a long walk for young children

 

Crimpiau ‘When a hill becomes a mountain’
All good things come in small packages, and this is exactly why Crimpiau is a must!

  • Cost: £7.50 – £15
  • Meet at: Siabod Café
  • Time: 11:00am
  • Notes: Packed Lunch & Drinks needed.
  • Clothing: Dressed and shod for a hill walk
  • Dogs: No
  • Suitable for: Everyone

Moel Siabod ‘Capel’s own mountain’
Explore the highest peak in the Moelwynion mountain range at 872m where you can view 13 of the 14 highest peaks in wales on a clear day!

  • Cost: £20
  • Meet at: Tyn y Coed
  • Time: 11:00am
  • Notes: Packed Lunch & Drinks needed. We will return to the Tyn y Coed for 4.00 pm.
  • Clothing: This is a proper high-level mountain walk and mountain walking boots and waterproofs along with a good level of fitness will be required.
  • Dogs: No
  • Suitable for: This 9 or 10 mile walk, in mountainous terrain, Would feel like a long walk for young children.

 

The Fairy Glen from Betws y Coed
Explore the atmospheric gorge full of wildlife and plants such as wild garlic!

  • Cost: £10 – £20
  • Meet at: The Royal Oak
  • Time: 11:00am
  • Notes: Packed Lunch & Drinks needed.
  • Clothing: Good walking shoes or boots and waterproofs will be necessary for this walk.
  • Dogs: No
  • Suitable for: Not for very young children.
