Easier Routes in Snowdonia to Explore with the Family

It’s not easy knowing which walks will be suitable for the kids when you visit a new area – especially in the challenging landscape of Snowdonia. Luckily, this list of places to visit and walks to enjoy means you can be confident you’re not going to be stuck at a difficult scramble with a young child. These walks are by no means pushchair friendly due to some rocky paths, but are manageable for ones with little legs. 

Only you know the abilities of your children, some may be capable of walking to the peaks of Snowdon or Tryfan, but if you’re less experienced then these are some places you should definitely check out. There are caravans for sale Snowdonia if you want to start making regular visits here!

Gelert’s Grave

This walk is as easy as it gets for the really little ones, or for anyone who just walks a relaxing walk in the fresh air. It follows a footpath along the banks of the Glaslyn, and ends up at the most famous historical monument in Beddgelert ‘Gelert’s Grave’.

There is a legendary tale that the grave marks which you can read and find out how the dog Gelert tragically died. 

Cwm Idwal

Starting at the path from the Ogwen Cottage and Visitors Centre, this walk takes you up to Llyn Idwal which is accompanied by the dramatic views of the surrounding mountains. 

Once at the lake, you have the option to walk around it or just sit and enjoy the scenery. For more experienced walkers that are after a hike, you could walk up Devils Kitchen. 

Llyn Llydaw and Glaslyn from Pen y Pass

If you aren’t all confident enough to walk up Snowdon, then this can be a little taster session. The walk is the same there and back, so you can stop and walk back at any point. Toddler can manage up to Llyn Llydaw, and the older ones can go up to Glaslyn. 

This walk can have superb views of Snowdon on a clear day!

The Low Summits of the North Carneddau

This one is a bit more unknown, and you may have to make your own routes, but it’s worth the effort! It’s generally quite clear, the perfect spot to introduce your little ones to going off path. 

There are a few mini ridges to enjoy with views of the higher Carneddau peaks looking impressive from here. You can finish off the walk by marching back to the car on a Roman road.
