Staying Safe on Snowdon

SnowdonThere’s been some unfortunate news of late regarding accidents upon the iconic mountain of Snowdon during day activities that have ended in disaster. Despite the bad weather, accidents have been on the rise after plucky adventurers descended to ascend its slopes nonetheless.

With this in mind, take a look at this guide that’s been compiled especially just to help you make sure you’re safe and well-prepared before you tackle this iconic Welsh landmark.

Plan Ahead

Make sure you know your route like the back of your hand. Getting lost because you’ve approached a big challenge on the fly is never desirable so make sure you’re prepared by studying maps and the general area before attempting an ascent.

Also, it’s important that your loved ones are aware of where you are going to be before you set off. If the worst comes to worst, they can then call for help with your possible location being pinpointed.

Wear the right clothes

As silly as it sounds, a Hawaiian shirt and a pair of cut-off chino shorts just aren’t going to cut it on your adventure.

Remember to wear multiple layers that aren’t too thick. The thicker the material, the harder it is to insulate as thinner layers allow better circulation of warm air through your body. Make sure your jacket is waterproof and opt for a hat if the weather is on the chilly side.

Take the right tools

Check, double-check and then check again what you’re deciding to bring with you on your ascent. Leaving something behind that you could need as you try to beat the climb may be a case of life or death.

A map and a compass are absolute essentials also and they should be at the very top of the list of the items to collect. Space permitting, you should remember a torch and a first aid kit as well. The first thing you may leap to in case of emergency is your mobile but just remember, signal strength may vary depending on where you are with reception being patchy in some areas of Snowdon.
