Blas — "taste" in Welsh — is a restaurant in Caernarfon occupying a medieval building within the town walls, its kitchen producing seasonal Welsh cooking at a level that would be noticed in any British city. The Setting
The building — medieval stone, low ceilings, thick walls — provides an atmospheric setting that enhances the food rather than competing with it. The walk from the castle through the town walls to the restaurant passes the full spectacle of Caernarfon's historic townscape. After dinner, the castle is lit against the night sky on the walk back. This is eating as a complete cultural experience.
The Food
The menu changes seasonally, reflecting what is available from Welsh producers in any given month. Anglesey sea salt lamb, Menai mussels, Llyn lobster, and vegetables from local growers appear alongside more unusual Welsh produce that rarely reaches restaurant menus. The cooking is technically accomplished without being overwrought — a balance that allows the quality of Welsh ingredients to be the point.
