The Llechwedd Slate Caverns above Blaenau Ffestiniog give access to the underground world of the Victorian slate miner — vast chambers lit by candles, tunnels driven into the mountain by hand, the underground lake and the 1.8km of Victorian working levels. The Underground World
Llechwedd was working from 1846 until the 1970s, and the underground workings — pillars left to support the roof, the galleries cut at different levels, the extraordinary volumes of rock removed by men using hand tools and black powder — preserve the physical reality of Victorian quarrying in a way that surface sites cannot. The temperature underground is a constant 8°C year-round; bring a layer.
The Scale
The scale of Llechwedd's underground workings is genuinely surprising. The main chambers are cathedral-sized spaces, the pillars of slate left to support roofs 30 metres above the floor. The sound of water echoes through the tunnels. The combination of industrial history, geological scale, and underground atmosphere makes this one of the most distinctive visitor experiences in Eryri.
