Welsh Whisky at Penderyn — Experience #56

Welsh Whisky at Penderyn — Experience #56

The Penderyn Distillery, in the village of Penderyn in the Brecon Beacons, is Wales's primary whisky distillery — the first Welsh whisky to be produced commercially since the Victorian era. The Madeira finish has become the signature expression, and the whisky is now widely available across Eryri and beyond. Seeking it out — in the right pub, properly poured — is Experience #56 of the Snowdonia 100.

The Madeira Finish

The Penderyn Madeira finish — the whisky's most widely available expression — is aged in bourbon casks and finished in Madeira wine casks, giving it a distinctive fruity, honeyed character with less of the heavy peat smoke that characterises Scotch. It is a lighter style, approachable for non-whisky drinkers, and pairs well with the landscape in which it is drunk — the western maritime climate of Wales producing a different sensibility from the eastern islands where Scotch is made.

The History

Commercial whisky production ceased in Wales in the late 19th century and was not revived until Penderyn opened in 2000, producing its first whisky under Royal Warrant. The revival came partly from a desire to reclaim a tradition that had been lost and partly from the recognition that Wales had everything required — water, grain, expertise — to make excellent whisky. The result has exceeded expectations and spawned several other small Welsh distilleries.
